Background
Paul’s interest in art began in the early 1990’s when he enrolled on an evening class for life drawing, combined with Art History. From the first night, he was hooked.
He graduated in 1997 with a degree in Art History (and a Fine Art MA in 2007), a subject that continues to permeate and influence his artworks today.
His work and inspirations
Paul remarks “At the core of my paintings is the search for a precision of focus on the formal properties of mundane objects that have an everyday, unremarkable presence in our lives. This results in a familiar and nostalgic content, and for me a more intimate relationship with their representation.
My studio is now littered with hundreds of these objects, all vying for attention within a composition often created by chance: a small shift to the side, a slight change in light, and suddenly a formally discarded object has newly discovered strengths.”
Recent Exhibitions
Paul’s works have been exhibited this year at Mall Galleries, London as part of the UK Art For Youth series, as part of the Open House Arts Trail in Saltaire, at Howngrown, Sheffield (Best In Show) and Gallerytop, Rownsley, Holmfirth Artweek 2009 and was an award winner at Rotherham Open.
Paul works in oils, usually on a dark, reddish-sienna ground, with a tonal under-painting, usually on canvas mounted on hardboard. His paintings are sealed with a matt varnish.
